Tour Two Itinerary
Tour 2
This tour which is run in association with Oates Travel, who will operate a comfortable eight-seat minibus, departs from St. Ives at 10.00am to visit a number of the most notable prehistoric sites in the area, including ‘Lanyon Quoit’, ‘Men-an-Tol’ and the ‘Merry Maidens’ stone circle, returning to St. Ives at around 3.30 pm.
We begin our journey through this ancient landscape by travelling along the north coast road to alight for our first visit by the ‘Eagles Nest’, former home of the late artist Patrick Heron. From here after a pleasant moorland walk we can view the massive stones of the impressive portal dolmen ‘Zennor Quoit’.
Having passed by the village of Zennor and observed the diminutive Entrance Grave at Pennance, we visit next the small barrow cemetery at Treen. Then continue on up to the high open moorlands to ponder the enigmatic hole stone ‘Men-an-Tol’.
After a pleasant lunch break at Lanyon Farm in the heart of this ancient landscape, we visit perhaps the most recognisable of Penwith’s ancient monuments ‘Lanyon Quoit’.
The concentration of monuments around the wonderful stone circle of the Merry Maidens justifies the short detour around Penzance and Newlyn we must now undertake on leaving Lanyon. Beautifully situated on a sloping meadow of wild flowers, with the entrance grave of Tregiffin and the Pipers standing stones close by, make this an essential stop. Before we complete our journey at the well preserved Iron Age settlement of Carn Euny, with its mysterious fogous.
This tour, which is limited to eight persons, costs £30 per person. Each party booking will receive a tour brochure containing maps, reconstruction drawings and a brief outline of each period of prehistory in this area.
