Tour Two Itinerary

Tour 2

This tour is undertaken by car or minibus, and departs from St. Ives at 10.00am to visit a number of the most notable prehistoric sites in the area, including  ‘Lanyon Quoit’, ‘Men-an-Tol’ and the ‘Merry Maidens’ stone circle, returning to St. Ives at around 4.00 pm.

We begin our journey through this ancient landscape by travelling along the north coast road, pass by the village of Zennor and observe the diminutive Entrance Grave at Pennance. We then climb from the coast road into the heart of the ‘Penwith Uplands’ to visit the concentration of sites around Chun and Lanyon.

At Chun we climb the hill to enter Iron Age Hillfort of Chun Castle and from it view the courtyard-house settlement of Bosullow Trehyllys below - then take the short moorland walk to visit Chun Quoit. Returning to the Madron road at Lanyon, we ponder the enigmatic hole stone ‘Men-an-Tol’ and then visit ‘Lanyon Quoit’, probably the two most recognisable monuments in the area.

After a pleasant lunch break at Lamorma Pottery, where a light lunch can be purchased, we drive the short distance to the ‘Merry Maidens’.

The concentration of monuments around the wonderful stone circle of the ‘Merry Maidens’ justifies the short detour around Penzance and Newlyn we have to take on leaving Lanyon. Beautifully situated on a sloping meadow of wild flowers, with the entrance grave of Tregiffin and the Pipers standing stones close by, make this an essential stop. We then complete our journey at the well preserved Iron Age settlement of Carn Euny, with its mysterious fogous.

This tour, which is limited to eight persons, costs £30 per person. Each party booking will receive a tour brochure containing maps, reconstruction drawings and a brief outline of each period of prehistory in this area. For smaller parties this tour is undertaken by car, minibus tours must be booked well in advance and prepaid.
