Tour One Itinerary
Tour 1
After parking in the heart of the beautiful moorland countryside of the West Penwith, the first leg of this leisurely walking tour takes us to what is almost certainly the most recognisable monument in the area. At Lanyon Quoit we will learn of the first farmers to settle in Cornwall, the type of monument they built, along with the religious beliefs that inspired their construction.
The tour then continues on chronologically, visiting first the late Neolithic entrance grave at Bosiliack. Then explores the early Bronze Age landscape around the stone circle of Boskednan on the ridge below the fortified hilltop settlement on Carn Galva. This includes a visit to the enigmatic and as yet unexplained hole stone of Men-an–Tol and the stone of writing Men Scryfa.
After enjoying a lunch break at Lanyon Farm, where a light lunch can be purchased. The tour then progresses west across the moorland road to view the Iron Age courtyard-house settlement of Bosullow Trehyllys. Then climbs the hill to enter the impressive walls of Chun Castle, which the settlement below once served.
Our journey ends as it began, at one of the earliest monuments in this landscape, Chun Quoit. There to undertake a brief resume of the five thousand years of prehistory that separate this monument from the castle on the hill above it. We then return to the moorland road and our starting point, to complete this tour of the ‘Ancient Stones of Kernow’.
This tour which is limited to eight persons costs £12.50 per person for a minimum party of four persons. Each group booking will receive a tour brochure containing maps, reconstruction drawings and a brief outline of each period of prehistory in this area.
